TRAVEL · PRICES AND TRUST
Does Korea never scam tourists? Travel without price surprises
Korea is not free from overcharging. The practical advantage is that taxis, menus, apps, and complaints usually leave an easy-to-check trail.

QUICK ANSWER
Use the official airport rank, check the meter or approved fare, confirm the VAT-inclusive total, do not add a tip automatically, and keep the plate, screenshot, or receipt. A thirty-second check prevents most price shocks.
01 · AIRPORT
Official taxi, meter, or approved fare
At Incheon, ignore anyone offering a car inside the terminal and follow TAXI signs to the designated rank. Standard taxis use meters; some official international services may use an approved zone fare between the airport and Seoul. Confirm the method before boarding.
02 · CITY
An app gives you four pieces of evidence
You can still hail a taxi in Seoul, but Kakao T and taxi services available through Uber are often more predictable: they show pickup, destination, plate, and an estimate. Match the plate and do not pay twice if the app already charged you.
03 · RESTAURANTS
VAT included, no automatic tip calculation
Restaurant menus should show the final amount the customer pays, including VAT. Tipping is not generally customary in Korea. If a dish is listed at KRW 12,000 and you order no extras, do not add another 10% tax and 15% tip.

04 · PRICE
Posted does not mean identical everywhere
Price-display rules encourage visible totals, but traditional markets, custom goods, promotions, and private services can vary. Ask “total price?” and confirm whether the amount is per person, table, or service.
05 · REVIEWS
Bad experiences become visible
Compare recent menu photos, reviews that explain what was paid, and the business’s replies. A high rating helps, but it is not insurance: look for concrete details and consistent signals across more than one platform.
06 · PEOPLE
A serious face does not mean they will not help
Say “Excuse me,” show the destination written in Korean, and ask one short question. Some people will answer in English; others will point. If language becomes a barrier, the 1330 tourism service offers multilingual assistance.

Price, comparison, and proof
Before paying or boarding: find a visible fare, compare it with a map listing or app estimate, and keep a screenshot, plate number, or receipt. One search cannot remove every risk, but it prevents accepting a price with no reference and supports a complaint.
